Softball state tournament notebook: Praise from Piedmont

Piedmont gives Oologah high marks after Class 4A championship game.

Piedmont head coach Rick Scott had nothing but good things to say following his team's loss to Oologah in the 4A championship game. “You have to give credit to Oologah,” Scott said. “I'm really proud of my girls. We had a pretty good run, and I'm happy with that.”


THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM

The state title was a sweet one for Oologah, a team that had reached the state tournament in the previous two seasons but had failed to advance past the first round in 2010 and the semifinals in 2011.

JEFFS MASTERFUL IN WIN

Oologah junior pitcher Hunter Jeffs was brilliant in her performance in the 4A title game. Jeffs struck out eight but kept Piedmont's offense off the board. Jeffs used a rise ball to keep Piedmont off balance and even after giving up a leadoff single to Kylie Palmer in the fifth, settled down, retiring six straight to end the game.

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY

Oologah and Piedmont resumed their game Monday at 2 p.m. after Saturday's action was washed out. The two teams dealt with two delays on Saturday. The first was for lighting and lasted 17 minutes. The second delay was brief, only lasting four minutes before OSSAA officials made the decision to suspend the game.
