University of Oklahoma award-winning educator Tom Boyd is retiring for the second time. He was honored for his more than 40 years of service during a ring ceremony.

President David L. Boren presented Boyd with the 2013 class ring on Friday in the courtyard of the Oklahoma Memorial Union during a ceremony that also paid tribute to the 2013 graduating class.

The ring ceremony honors graduating seniors and alumni from all classes, highlights student commitment to higher education and recognizes the heritage of the OU community.

Boyd initially retired in 1997 while serving as Kingfisher Chair of Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. He was talked out of retirement five years later by Boren and enlisted for service in the new religious studies program.

Boyd currently is teaching and serves as a consultant to the program, but has said he will retire this year.

“Tom Boyd is a truly great teacher. He always puts students first. He excites his students about learning and challenges them in ways that cause them to grow intellectually,” Boren said.
