Jalen Saunders knows the media will call this a moral victory for him.

Saunders' eight catches in the first quarter set a record for the most catches in a quarter in program history.

They mean nothing to Saunders.

It wasn't a victory for him because the final score of 30-13 wasn't in Oklahoma's favor. It was another win for undefeated Notre Dame.

Three weeks ago, Saunders and the Sooners found out his waiver from Fresno State had been approved by the NCAA. Mid-practice, the wide receiver moved from scout to first team. Later that week, he had a two-catch performance at Texas and then stood out Saturday against Notre Dame.

“I was just doing my job,” Saunders said. “I am disappointed in the loss.”

His job, according to offensive coordinator Josh Heupel, was to get beyond the Irish's aggressive front seven but stay in front of their large safeties.

“Defensively, (the Irish) don't give up big plays,” Heupel said.

Saunders said there was no game plan devised to get him more receptions, only to take what the defense gave him.

Get open. Catch the ball.

Saunders ended Saturday night with 15 catches for 181 yards in his third game with the Sooners.

Fullback Trey Millard said Saunders is just like every other wide receiver for the Sooners — he knows how to make lots of plays. The junior's previous experience, though, is what Millard said makes him a greater threat.

“I'm not a person to just sit on my own accolades or stats,” Saunders said. “I love winning. That's why I play football. It just hurts to lose a game like this because we prepared this week. It hurts real bad.”
