Oklahoma will light its Capitol Dome “blue” Wednesday, Nov. 14, to help raise diabetes awareness and to remind residents about the World Diabetes Event “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” which will be held in the State Capitol Building from 5:30 to 7:30 that evening.

Residents attending the World Diabetes Day event can take part in diabetes screenings, pick up free supplies and information about free services, get a referral for treatment and participate in other fun and educational activities.

“This is the fourth year for us to have this event,” commented Diana Romano, a Registered and Licensed Dietitian who is also a Family and Consumer Sciences Educator for the Oklahoma County OSU Cooperative Extension Service.

“Oklahoma has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the nation and we offer this service for people to come and see if they might have diabetes or even a pre-diabetes condition. We also offer help for people who already have the disease.”

Special guest speaker for the event is Marcus Dupree, former OU football star, who will discuss “Living Happily with Diabetes.” Along with Marcus, other Oklahomans with diabetes will also share their personal stories that can help others with the disease.

Oklahoma State Senator Constance N. Johnson, District 48, will also be on hand at the event. Johnson has been instrumental in drawing attention to the prevalence of diabetes in Oklahoma and taking steps to insure that the World Diabetes Day event at the Capitol offers helpful education and information to residents.
