LAWTON — Soldiers from Fort Sill participated Wednesday in an exercise with soldiers from Singapore involving rocket-fired artillery.
The exercise put soldiers from the two countries side-by-side as they fired High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, a truck-mounted launcher that can fire munitions more than 180 miles. Soldiers also practiced calling in artillery and aircraft strikes and working together with their foreign counterparts, military officials said.
Singapore is a key ally for the United States in the Pacific Rim.
The exercise, which has been done annually for the past four years, is called Operation Daring Warrior. The exercise gives Singapore's military a chance to live-fire their High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems at a large artillery range, which isn't possible on the tiny island nation.
Officials said this is the first chance many of the Singaporean soldiers have had to fire the system they have been trained to use.
