A teenager is accused of stealing $35,000 from his grandmother, Oklahoma City police reported Thursday.

Montrael Haynes, 15, was arrested Tuesday on three complaints of larceny.

Elvenia Lorreta Wiggins, 56, called police after she discovered money was missing from her home safe, according to the police report.

Wiggins is Haynes' legal guardian.

Wiggins told police that she discovered $800 was missing from her purse a few weeks ago. She grew suspicious of her grandson when he started coming home with expensive items she did not purchase, according to the police report.

On Oct. 26, the parent of a classmate told Wiggins that Haynes gave her son $100 and a pair of shoes worth $250, according to the report.

She was told by others that Haynes was passing out $100 bills at his school “like it was bubble gum,” according to the report.

Wiggins noticed some money on the floor outside the safe and when she counted the money in the safe, she found that about $34,000 was missing, police reported.

Wiggins told police that additional cash she stashed throughout her house also was missing.

Haynes was arrested after he talked to police and was taken to the juvenile detention center.
