Tallgrass Prairie Preserve's bison herd brought in for annual checkup

PAWHUSKA - Swept in from the prairie by flatbed trucks, scores of bison stand corralled beneath the moon and rising sun.

Bellows lay the soundtrack of the morning. Calves sidle up to cows. Bulls frolic in hay until they wear it like a wig.

"I never get tired of it," said Harvey Payne, director emeritus of the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. "They are such magical creatures."
