To honor the men and women in uniform who serve our country, Best Friends of Pets is offering a special military discount to have cats and dogs spayed or neutered through SNAP, its Spay/Neuter Assistance Program.

“We were touched to find out that we helped an Oklahoma Army National Guardsman get his puppy spayed,” explained Kim Schlittler, executive director. “He was on a forward operating base (FOB) in Afghanistan and knowing ‘Molly’ was waiting on him when he got home helped him get through the last 2-3 months of his deployment.”

Active and retired military pet owners in the Oklahoma City metro area will receive $10 off SNAP’s regular fees when they submit a copy of their military ID. SNAP applications must be approved in November to qualify for the discount.

Low-income military pet owners receiving Medicaid, OKDHS or SSI (Supplemental Security Income) benefits or meeting Medicaid income guidelines can have cats spayed or neutered for free and dogs for $10. General public assistance is also available based on income.

Rabies vaccinations are $5 and are only offered when the pet is spayed or neutered. Puppies and kittens as young as 8 weeks or weighing at least 2 pounds can be spayed or neutered. Best Friends of Pets’ SNAP works with veterinary and nonprofit spay/neuter clinics throughout the Oklahoma City metro area.
