State school board member out of touch with classrooms

Published: November 4, 2012

Regarding “Board OKs release of A-F grades, scolds educators” (News, Oct. 26): If state Board of Education member Lee Baxter wants to feel like a pawn, perhaps he and his fellow board members should spend a year teaching in an Oklahoma classroom. There, his work would be at the mercy of the whims of politicians, bureaucrats and a society that often places little value on learning. We shouldn't ask the board members to live that year on the salary of the average Oklahoma schoolteacher — that would be too painful, if not downright impossible.
