Tie-dye is finding a new groove.

This is not DIY dip and dye. Updated, intricate tie-dyed designs are showing up on runways and celebrities, such as Minka Kelly. You can find the ornate and colorful prints on everything from denim to cocktail dresses.

It’s a “joyful” fall trend, said Katy Hamilton, owner of Shopgirls Boutique in Kansas City, Mo.

“Tie-dye is more accessible than ever,” she said. “It’s not just festival wear anymore.”

Hamilton suggests pairing a fun and casual tie-dyed piece with something more intricate, such as a lace skirt or a structured jacket for a “chic contradiction.”

She also recommends adding feminine accessories to tie-dyed attire for a dressed-up, hippie look.

A tie-dye tunic paired with sparkling baubles is a playful paradox; or wear a tie-dye T-shirt under a plain dress or blazer for a little pop of fun, Hamilton said.
