American politics a contest between liberty and equality

The great contest in American politics over much of the past century has been the contest between liberty and equality. It can be argued that that same contest began in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence when Thomas Jefferson lauded both liberty and equality as being “self-evident.” The re-election of Barack Obama signifies that this contest is over and equality has won. We can look “Forward” to a future of lessening liberty and growing equality — albeit an equality of the lowest common denominator. Since we can't make the short man tall, we will now shorten the tall man.
