EDMOND — David Willingham, a retired Army command sergeant major, spoke to Cheyenne Middle School students Friday during a Veterans Day assembly.
Willingham was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 and sent to South Vietnam where he was an artilleryman with an 8-inch howitzer and 175 mm gun battery for “C” Battery 6th Battalion 27th Field Artillery.
He served in the 1345 Transportation Company at Ardmore as the unit first sergeant from 1982 to 1990. He also served as the senior transportation NCO for Headquarters State Area Command and culminated his military career as the sergeant major for the Recruiting and Retention Command.
He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Campaign Medal (with three campaign stars) along with 20 other medals and ribbons and various badges, including The Adjutant General Staff Badge.
