Arlington National Cemetery's “ANC Explorer,” is a new, free application that allows people to use a smartphone or web browser to locate grave sites, events or other points of interest at the cemetery.

The app provides information from more than 150 years of records, which were compared with the 259,978 gravesite photographs taken by the Army. Users also may generate front-and-back photos of a headstone or monument and receive directions to these locations.

ANC Explorer is available on Arlington's website at www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/ancexplorer, the iTunes store and Google Play. It also is loaded on new kiosks in Arlington National Cemetery's Visitors Center.

Maj. Nicholas R. Miller, Arlington National Cemetery chief information officer, said that this is just the beginning. In the future, ANC Explorer will offer features such as emergency and event notifications, shuttle stops and self-guided tours.
