Destiny Christian rode the running back tandem of Boston Mims and Tay Washington to a 72-26 victory over the Oklahoma City Patriots on Friday at Putnam City West to capture the OCSAA Class 3A state championship.
Mims, a junior, ran wild for 278 yards and six touchdowns on 25 carries. His senior running mate, Washington added 249 yards, three TDs and three two-point conversions on 14 attempts. Destiny Christian (9-3) avenged a loss to the Patriots (10-2) from earlier this year.
Taking advantage of a short field, Mims put Destiny on the board with a 5-yard TD run. The Wildcats only had to drive 23 yards for the score after the Patriots turned the ball over on downs. Washington added the conversion for the 8-0 lead 6:06 into the game.
Daniel Nimmo ran 11 yards for a touchdown to pull the Patriots within 8-6 at the 4:51 mark. Then Mims, Washington and Destiny Christian went to work.
Mims added another 5-yard TD run, then Washington had a 13-yard scoring gallop for a 24-6 Destiny Christian lead through the first quarter.
Craig Hofield's 13-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Batley with 3:02 on the clock finished the game off, putting the Wildcats up 72-26. Mims turned in a 73-yard run — his long of the night — to set up the final score.
The game was delayed nearly 40 minutes while medical personnel attended to Destiny Christian's Corbin Burger. Burger left the game on a stretcher and gave a thumbs up to the crowd.
Just a few days before their playoff-opener, Carl Albert received some very good news.
Titans defensive coordinator Mike Corley, who has been fighting cancer since the spring, had a PET scan and was declared to be officially in remission Tuesday.
Corley is cancer-free.
“Thank the Lord God,” Titans coach Gary Rose said. “That's better than winning any ballgame.”
Corley has coached through this season after a tumor was discovered on his neck in the spring.
Corley's defense came up big in the Titans' 28-21 upset over Del City in the first round.
“He's a great, great coach,” Rose said.
