MIDWEST CITY -- The Midwest City Fire Department has announced that 16 firefighters received promotions during a ceremony Nov. 21 at the Midwest City Senior Center.

According to Fire Chief Randy Olsen, the Department has recently seen the retirement of just over 10 percent of our total department personnel, creating the need to conduct promotion testing to fill these key positions within our department.

In addition, Olsen said, retirements and promotions have led to the department being able to reorganize and reallocate man power throughout the city.

“We are very pleased to recognize these outstanding firefighters for not only their promotions, but, for their service to our community. These newly promoted officers represent the future leadership of our department.

" I believe that we are in great shape to continue the legacy left by those who lead this Department to be one of the finest, if not the finest fire departments in the Ccuntry," Olsen said.

Firefighters receiving promotions include:

Ryan Ashley: promoted from Firefighter to Apparatus Operator. Ashley joined the MWC department in 2005 and is currently assigned to Station No. 1.

On Dec. 30, 2011, Ashley was a part of the crew that responded to Choctaw and rescued three teenagers from the water tower, via rope rescue.

On May 7, 2012, Ashley was again a part of the crew that responded to Raintree Apartments and assisted with rescuing three residents from the second story window by ladder.

Ashley enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters.

J.C. Carroll: promoted from Lieutenant to Captain. Carroll joined the MWC department in 1998 and is assigned to Station No. 6.

Eddie Ellis: promoted from Senior Firefighter to Driver/Operator. Ellis joined the MWC department in 2003 and is assigned to Station No. 4. Ellis has received several letters of recognition for repairs made on fire stations. He enjoys hunting, fishing and anything to do with firearms.

Gavin Hall: promoted from Senior Firefighter to Apparatus Operator. Hall joined the MWC department in 2007 and is assigned to Station No. 1. When not on duty, Hall enjoys playing golf.

Michael D. Herron: promoted from Lieutenant to Captain. Herron joined the MWC department in 1996 and is assigned to Station No. 1.

While at the department, Herron has been a member of the Honor Guard since 2003, Tech Rescue member, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) committee member, instructor for Green Shift EMS, and safety committee member.

In addition, Herron has been recognized by the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association for "acts above and beyond the call of duty" relating to an accident on Interstate 40.

Herron is also the chairperson for the departments Health & Wellness committee.

Brian Iley: promoted from Senior Firefighter to Apparatus Operator. Iley joined the MWC department in 2004 and is assigned to Station No. 1.
