Congress should heed Sen. Tom Coburn's words

Published: November 30, 2012

As Congress battles with the question of how to address the national debt, I hope its members pay attention to advice provided by U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Muskogee. He states, “With $1 trillion being added annually to our $16 trillion debt, we can no longer afford to make excuses for not examining every corner of government for savings that could result from streamlining, consolidating, cutting and even eliminating those agencies and programs that are inefficient, duplicating or unnecessary. This must include the Department of Defense.”

Such advice is no surprise to those of us who have served in the military, where we saw firsthand wasteful Pentagon spending. Today, conversations with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans bring to light new examples of wasteful spending, perhaps the most alarming being about civilian contract workers making two to three times more money than military persons often doing the same jobs side by side.

My thanks to Coburn for his fiscal conservative voice on how to balance the national budget. I hope other members of Congress are listening to his advice on how to cut wasteful Pentagon spending.
