Jeans and overalls maker Round House Manufacturing broke ground Thursday on a 10,000-square-foot addition to its Shawnee plant and announced it will hire 40 workers.

Construction on the building is expected to be complete in June, said Vice President David Antosh.

He said the added space and employees are necessary to keep up with the company's growth, which he attributes to increased exporting and a surge of interest in American-made products.

“This last decade has been our best ever,” Antosh said of the company, which started in 1903 as Shawnee Garment Manufacturing Co.

In 2008, Round House opened a second factory in Wewoka, 35 miles away.

Round House products are sold at U.S. retailers such as Langston's, Walmart and Atwoods. But in the past decade, popularity has surged in other countries, where the products are sold in high-end boutiques, Antosh said.

“People overseas are interested in the authenticity of ‘Made in the USA,'” Antosh said. Round House exports to Japan, China, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Australia.

The company expects to fill the newly created manufacturing jobs by April.
