Oklahoma men's basketball notebook: Demons coach said Sooners play hard, tough to match physically

As Northwestern State basketball coach Mike McConathy walked out of his news conference, he made one last remark away from the mic.


“We tried to put the lipstick on the pig,” he said.

That cliché fit Friday night's 69-65 Oklahoma win the best.

The teams finished with a combined 76 rebounds and 36 personal fouls, 22 of which came from Northwestern State.

Oklahoma finished the game shooting 39.3 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from beyond the arc. Northwestern State was 37.9 percent in field goals and 33.3 percent off the three.

“You've got to credit OU in that they were so aggressive defensively,” McConathy said. “I've been in coaching for thirty-something years, so I know some coaches and they say they're as tough and they play as hard on defense as anybody they've seen in a long time.”

OKLAHOMA FINALLY GETS A BREAK

The Sooners have played five games in eight days, including the trip to Orlando, Fla., for the Old Spice Classic where they finished in third place.
