An application for a specific-use permit to build a Walmart Neighborhood Market in northwest Edmond has been delayed indefinitely.

More than 250 people showed up at the planning commission meeting last week to oppose the project on the northwest corner of Coffee Creek Road and Kelly Avenue.

City council members were scheduled to hear the request Monday. City Planner Bob Schiermeyer said city officials were notified Friday about the developer's decision.

No reason was given for the delay or any indication about the future of the project, Schiermeyer said.

“New notices will be sent out,” Schiermeyer said. “Everyone within 300 feet from it will get a new notice.”

The 41,179-square-foot neighborhood market was proposed to be built on 5.52 acres of land.

The application was denied last week by planning commissioners. Opponents applauded as planning commissioners voted 4-1 to deny the application. The city council would make the final decision.

Belmont Farms and Hunter's Creek housing additions and the Coffee Creek Golf Course and Clubhouse are on the other three corners of the intersection of Coffee Creek Road and Kelly Avenue.

Property owners in the area said the Neighborhood Market did not fit the harmony of the area. They also were concerned about the traffic, the pharmacy drive-thru and the store being open 24 hours a day.
