In response to Eddie V. Harris (Your Views, Dec. 2): Nothing in life is free. If I give my children a gift, they might think it's free, but I had to pay for it. What Harris is essentially saying is that when someone gets “free” health care, “free” contraception and all the rest, he doesn't care who pays for it. The government isn't Santa Claus; as a taxpayer, Harris pays for it. So do I. Do I want, or should I have to pay for, someone else's lifestyle choices (in the case of contraception or abortion)?
I recently watched a “Dr. Phil” episode where a woman had seven abortions. Should I, or anyone else, have to pay for her use of abortion as birth control? Martin Luther King Jr. once said he dreamed of day when his children “will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” When you inject race into things that have nothing to do with race, you diminish the seriousness of racism.
