If Drunken Turtle, Thin Mint Cream or Pecan Kumquat pie might tickle your taste buds, the women behind Pie Junkie can help. Leslie Mossman and Darcy Schein have been cooking together since 2008, adding pies to their repertoire in 2010. Customers' calls for pies began to overwhelm the other aspects of the business, so they created Oklahoma City-based Pie Junkie and began baking full time.
Pie Junkie's menu lists 45 different delicacies, from traditional pumpkin, apple or French silk to specialties like Bird Dog (a blackberry whiskey buttermilk creation) and Macadamia Crusted Key Lime. Everything is made from scratch, including the crust. Mossman and Schein will even entertain a family recipe, if the customer desires.
“We're just two moms who — this is what we do; we make pie,” Mossman said.
The pies are served by the slice at S&B's Burger Joint and The Paramount OKC. But customers can also order a whole pie and pick it up at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where Mossman and Schein rent the church's commercial kitchen until they find a store of their own.
Pie Junkie bakes an average of 200 pies a week but did that many in a single day for Thanksgiving. Christmas will be busy, too, says Mossman. And the pies' popularity is spreading, with customers ordering pies to give as gifts. They've even catered weddings.
Pie Junkie charges $16-$18 for pies; they also bake savory pies such as quiche and sausage pie and offer a prepared meal for customers one day a week.
