On the outside, knocking

Published: December 19, 2012

Our hearts were torn this week along with the people of Newtown, Conn., at the horrible tragedy they experienced. We were moved as we watched the interfaith prayer vigil on Sunday evening. We heard the usual questions that are asked every time we experience a school shooting: How can such evil come to such innocent children? Where was God when this happened?

I believe God was standing outside, knocking on the door, but we as a nation won't let Him enter. We've allowed a few atheists and activist judges to remove the Ten Commandments from school walls. Schools can no longer display manger scenes or tell the story of Christ's birth because they might offend some non-believer. Teachers, along with many chaplains, can't pray for God's blessing in “Jesus” name. We can't ask God's blessing at athletic contests. In short, God has been expelled from our schools.

An absence of God always leaves a vacuum into which evil is quick to gravitate. We shouldn't be surprised that these things happen when we've allowed a few evil persons to dominate our society. They intend to eliminate Him from all sections of our society. These people may offend Christians all they want, but Christians dare not offend them.

Sunday, the nation asked for God's blessing. But come Monday morning He once again stood outside the door.
