“The work is nearing 40 percent completion,” Stevens said.

The competitive swimming pool and recreation center being built in J.L. Mitch Park is a partnership involving the city, Edmond Public Schools and the YMCA.

“At this point, everyone continues to be encouraged that the project will be completed by the end of 2013,” Stevens said. “The current focus is to get the building enclosed before colder weather arrives.”

Roof installation is nearly completed over the classroom and exercise areas, and roof work then will move to the gymnasium area.

“The concrete block work is focused on the aquatic areas, and steel is being installed where this work is completed,” the city manager said.

The center will include an eight-lane, 50-meter swimming pool that is 7 feet deep on the south end and 13.6 feet deep on the north end. Seating for up to 800 spectators will be built in the pool area.
