Recently, Oklahoma’s biggest concerns with its recruiting class were at defensive tackle and offensive line.

Wednesday, on the opening day of the junior college midterm signing period, the Sooners got a boost in both.

First, Trinity Valley (Texas) defensive tackle Quincy Russell signed with OU. Then later in the day his junior college teammate, offensive tackle Josiah St. John, committed to Oklahoma.

Then the Sooners got an even bigger boost on the offensive line when Houston Stratford offensive tackle Christian Daimler committed to the Sooners after decommitting from Arizona State earlier in the day.

Russell (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) picked OU over Nebraska and also had offers from Oklahoma State, Baylor, Houston, TCU and Texas Tech.

He signed with Texas out of high school but wound up at Trinity after failing to qualify academically.

Russell was named an NJCAA All-American after recording 75 tackles and a pair of sacks for the Cardinals.

Russell is expected to enroll in January. St. John, who has three years to play two in Norman, might not arrive in Norman until after the spring semester.

The Sooners did not have any interior defensive linemen committed until late last week when Dallas Skyline’s Kerrick Huggins switched his commitment from Texas A&M to the Sooners.

With defensive tackles Jamarkus McFarland, Casey Walker and Stacy McGee set to graduate, along with David King, who split time between tackle and end, the Sooners have plenty of need for the spot in the 2013 class.
