Randall Stephenson's downtown Dallas office is full of Oklahoma football memorabilia.

The OU alumnus and luxury suite owner calls college football his favorite sport, “without a doubt.”

“I'm very close to the school,” Stephenson said. “I consider (President) David Boren a dear friend.

“I take great pride in the program.”

But the AT&T chairman and CEO is a little concerned about attending January 4's Cotton Bowl Classic, which is played inside Arlington's Cowboys Stadium.

The last time he watched his alma mater play there, Brigham Young knocked Sam Bradford out of the game and upset the Sooners to open the 2009 season.

“I think it's going to be fun, but I'm very apprehensive,” Stephenson said. “Bob Stoops may not want me to come.”

Stephenson's bachelor's degree is from Central Oklahoma in Edmond, and he earned an MBA from OU. He took over as AT&T's chairman and CEO in 2007.

The next year, AT&T moved its corporate headquarters from San Antonio to Dallas; Stephenson said the Metroplex's central location and ability to attract graduates from surrounding colleges was part of the decision to relocate.

The many universities in Dallas' proximity result in job seeking graduates migrating to the Metroplex, with its cluster of corporate headquarters; it also creates a college football melting pot.

“It's not a coincidence that Cowboys Stadium has two, three or four marquee college football matchups every year,” Stephenson said.
