The fear of crime has caused many people to install burglar or security bars on doors and windows in Oklahoma City. While this precaution may help a homeowner feel safer as it relates to burglary or home invasion, often the thought of escaping from a fire is not considered, according to a news release from the Oklahoma City Fire Department.
Security bars on doors or windows can prevent the occupants of a home from escaping, and can present an obstacle to the rescue effort of firefighters.
The Oklahoma City Fire Department encourages all residents who have or who are considering the installation of burglar bars to install or replace security bars with only those that are equipped with an emergency release device.
Additionally, the fire department would like to remind people of these fire safety tips:
• Always have two ways out of every room
• Have working smoke alarms and test them monthly
• Make sure everyone can operate release devices on security bars
• Make a home escape plan and practice fire drills in the home
