If the numbers tell us anything, it’s that Web users are interested in Jennifer Lawrence, the young actress who starred this year in “The Hunger Games.”
Some are, uh, more interested than others.
More than 5,000 people were directed to NewsOK in 2012 after typing Lawrence’s name into a search engine, such as Google or Yahoo.
Another 7,313 reached The Oklahoman’s website via a similar search: “Jennifer Lawrence nude.”
Don’t worry: NewsOK isn’t in the business of posting naughty photos.
Instead, the search terms took readers to a 2011 post on the Nerdage blog; features editor Matt Price wrote about Lawrence’s reaction to appearing in “X-Men: First Class” wearing nothing but blue body paint and some strategically placed makeup appliances.
(She was OK with it.)
The Lawrence searches are among the more surprising things that brought readers to NewsOK in 2012.
The top 10 search terms make a lot more sense.
ESPN commentator and Oklahoma City native Skip Bayless (56,575 links) tops the list. Bayless has enjoyed a spectacular sports journalism career, including stints at some of the nation’s most respected newspapers. He is a polarizing figure locally due in part to his frequent criticism of Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook. Thunder small forward Kevin Durant jumped to his teammate’s defense in April, saying of Bayless: “That guy doesn’t know a thing about basketball.” (Bayless is the older brother of celebrity chef Rick Bayless.)
“OKC Thunder” (53,497) is a close second to Bayless … which Westbrook and Durant may find annoying. They did, after all, carry their young team to the NBA Finals, gaining fans worldwide and establishing Oklahoma City as the home of the best team in the Western Conference.
“Oklahoma City newspaper” (41,386), “news ok” (41,137) and “Oklahoma news” (35,202) came in third, fourth and fifth. “Oklahoma City news” (21,136) and “okc news” (19,961) were eighth and ninth. The searches suggest that readers were searching for a reliable news source in Oklahoma. Naturally, that brought them to NewsOK.
“Oklahoma weather” (26,216) and “Oklahoma weather radar” (18,266) ranked sixth and 10th. The state enjoyed a relatively mild storm season, but temperatures in spring and early summer were high. With the state’s rapidly changing atmospheric conditions, Oklahomans have learned to check the forecast each day.
“American Idol” winner and country superstar Carrie Underwood (21,992) checked in at seventh place. Underwood was mentioned on NewsOK more than 60 times in 2012, including in a recent story about her latest Grammy nomination.
