Motorcyclists should cover own injuries

In response to Jack Wagner (Your Views, Dec. 24) and “Oklahoma's helmet laws for adult bikers still get debate” (News, Dec. 17): Motorcycle riders who don't wear helmets say that they do so in the name of freedom. This freedom also includes the apparent right to require the rest of us to pay for treating brain injuries when they do crash. The limited insurance that these riders carry, under the present law, wouldn't cover minor injuries, let alone the extensive brain surgery that's needed in too many crashes by these “freedom” riders. At a minimum, the law should require all riders to wear helmets or to opt out of wearing helmets by either proving that they have enough insurance to cover the brain trauma of an accident or to formally declare that their hospital treatment should be limited to the amount of insurance they carry. Freedom comes at a cost.
