Traffic stop ends in drug arrest
A man identified as a gang member was arrested on a complaint of drug trafficking after officers found more than half a pound of apparent meth in his car during a traffic stop, Oklahoma City police reported Friday. Miguel Alvarez, 33, of Oklahoma City, was arrested Wednesday near the 1600 block of Stonewall Avenue. Officers who stopped Alvarez because his car had a broken tag light confiscated a crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamines, police said. Alvarez has a prior felony conviction for possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute from 1998, according to court records. Police said Alvarez is a member of the South Side Locos. He was released from the Oklahoma County jail Friday on $80,000 bail.

Defendant rejects plea bargain
An Oklahoma man accused of killing his parents has turned down a plea deal and a judge granted a request that the trial be delayed. Le Flore County District Judge Jon Sullivan on Thursday set the trial for Kevin Paul Statham, 51, for May 6. Trial was to have begun Jan. 14. Prosecutors had offered Statham life without parole in exchange for guilty pleas to first-degree murder charges for the 2011 shotgun slayings of Helen Ruth Statham, 69, and Paul Everett Statham, 70, of Bokoshe. The death penalty is possible if he is convicted during a trial. The judge left open the possibility that Statham could accept the plea offer later.
14-year-old faces murder charge
A prosecutor has filed first-degree murder and burglary charges against a 14-year-old boy in the shooting death of a 47-year-old Nevada woman who was killed while visiting her parents in Oklahoma. Tulsa County District Attorney Tim Harris filed the charges Thursday in Tulsa County District Court, indicating that the teen will be prosecuted as an adult. Joshua Scott Mooney is charged in the Dec. 17 death of Mary Escue. Authorities say Escue's body was found in her parents' home. She had planned to attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Tulsa. Police say the teen broke in through a bathroom window to look for money. Authorities say he shot Escue in the house and stole her car.
