Let's be honest. Most of us let our beauty routines slide once in a while, even though we know it's not good to skip sunscreen or to slip off to bed without removing makeup.

And who among us hasn't gotten stuck in a rut with lip colors, makeup techniques and hairstyle, and before long, years have gone by without so much as a single change in makeup or hair?

The start of a new year is a good time to resolve to do better in many aspects of our lives, even with something as simple as makeup and hair.

We asked those who know about skin care, makeup and hair what resolutions they would like to see women make and keep as we dive into 2013.

Elizabeth Farris, cosmetics manager at Cayman's in Norman:

Make skin care a priority.

Never sleep in your makeup.

Choose a beauty routine that you can be consistent with, and be consistent. It's more important to use a good moisturizer and use it daily than to splurge on a great moisturizer and use it occasionally.

Strive for pretty skin so you can use less foundation.

Make seasonal changes with new eye shadow shades and lip colors for a fresh, modern look. Embrace one of spring's new pastels for an easy update.

Check out new colors and application techniques at local cosmetics counters.

Think of makeup as fashion and welcome change. You're not wearing the same top you wore five years ago. Why should your makeup be the same?

Steve Schardein, Schardein & Co.:

Use more professional hair care products, as well as deep conditioning treatments to repair damaged hair and to help keep it in tiptop shape.

Embrace the idea of less blond, less bleach and play up more natural tones. Women in London, Switzerland and Amsterdam are giving a nod to natural brown hues with subtle highlights, and their hair is reaping the benefits.
