Nonpartisan county voting is sought

Rep. Josh Cockroft said Wednesday he plans to file two measures that would make county elections nonpartisan. One would focus solely on sheriff elections; the other would make all county elections nonpartisan. Making the county positions nonpartisan is an important step to simply putting the right people in the right office, said Cockroft, R-Tecumseh. Nonpartisan elections would allow all voters to participate, even if candidates who file belong to only one party, he said.

AG Pruitt promotes prosecutor

Attorney General Scott Pruitt has named longtime prosecutor Charles Rogers as a senior assistant attorney general. Rogers, who served as chief of the multicounty grand jury unit, joins Neal Leader and Sandy Rinehart as senior assistant attorneys general. Rogers, 59, earned a bachelor's degree in 1975 from Oklahoma State University and a Juris Doctorate in 1978 from the University of Oklahoma College of Law. He has served Oklahoma as a felony prosecutor for 28 years, handling cases including bribery, securities fraud, murder, perjury, embezzlement and multiple cases of government corruption. Rogers first joined the attorney general's office in 1978 before leaving briefly to serve as a deputy appellate public defender for Oklahoma in 1980. Over the next 20 years, he served as a prosecutor in the attorney general's office and for district attorneys in Payne, Logan and Oklahoma counties.
