Sprint car legend Sammy Swindell won the 25-lap qualifying feature late Wednesday night at the annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals at Tulsa Expo Speedway.
The Germantown, Tenn., resident started on the pole and was not challenged. Swindell has won seven preliminary features in Chili Bowl history. He started to lap slower cars Wednesday by the 14th time around the indoor dirt track.
Damion Gardner and Jac Haudenschild finished second and third, respectively. All three have locked a position in Saturday night's championship race.
Qualifying continued late Thursday night.
OU STAR JOINS PRO LEAGUE
Former Oklahoma standout Renae Cuellar will play in the National Women's Soccer League. The forward is one of 55 players from the U.S., Canadian and Mexican national teams allocated to the professional league. The new NWSL has eight teams administered by the U.S. Soccer Federation. Teams in Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, Portland, New York, Seattle, Washington and Western New York will begin play this season.
Cuellar was named the 2012 Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year. She led the Sooners with 12 goals and 26 points, both team bests.
OSU'S SMART AWARD FINALIST
Oklahoma State freshman Marcus Smart is one of 20 finalists for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award. The National Basketball Hall of Fame honors the nation's most dominant point guards in college ball. The list of 20 will be pared to 10 in February and then to five in March by a national committee.
