If AR-15s are banned, what would take their place?

Published: January 13, 2013

I propose that the federal government ban Chevrolets. The most recent government statistics show that there were 33,808 traffic fatalities in 2009. My study indicates that 1,687 of those traffic fatalities were associated with Chevrolets. If we ban Chevrolets, one might conclude that we could save 1,687 lives per year.

Wait! Do you suppose the Chevrolet folks would begin driving Ford or Nissan or Hyundai or Chrysler rather than give up driving? If a bad-guy shooter can't buy an AR-15, do you think he's not going to buy or steal another style of weapon? I wish not to make light of the tragedy in Connecticut, but to those folks who demand action, please direct your energy to realistic solutions. Gun safes can keep most firearms away from children, thieves and other unauthorized users. If you can afford a tactical-style rifle, you can afford a gun safe to keep the weapon secure.

The United States has an estimated 270 million privately owned guns. That's 88.8 guns per 100 people. You can't put toothpaste back into the tube.
