EDMOND — Despite the cold weather, more than 675 runners and walkers turned out for the inaugural Forever Edmond 5k run to raise money for suicide prevention.
With donations still coming in on Monday, organizers said they will raise about $20,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and reaching out to people with mental disorders and to those affected by suicide.
During a two-week span in January 2012, three Edmond teenagers lost their lives to suicide.
Throughout the remainder of the year, Edmond police reported 13 suicides and 55 attempted suicides.
Officers also responded to 106 emergency detention calls and 49 other mental illness calls, said Jennifer Monroe, Edmond police spokeswoman.
Organizer Audrey Gruenbacher said of the run, “It was a very big success. We were hopeful that we would have 300. We will certainly do it again next year.”
