Mike Morgan's sentence mocks our 'justice' system
Regarding “Judge puts Morgan on probation for five years” (News, Jan. 9): The photo of former state Senate leader Mike Morgan smiling after his sentencing for a bribery conviction made me want a hot shower. The man was convicted of bribery charges and gets off with five years probation and community service? What a joke! We've been duped even further with the time, manpower and tax money wasted for the past five years on this trial.

This is the problem with our politicians and the judges who coddle them. A public servant is in a position of the highest trust by his community, therefore he has the highest responsibility to serve that public honestly. When they accept a bribe, they break not only the oath to which they swore but the faith that the public put in them to represent us.
Bribery has historically been a grave offense. In 11th-century Byzantium, corrupt officials were blinded, stripped of all their assets and exiled. I'm not saying we need to maim the man or even tar and feather him, but the punishment for a Senate leader accepting bribes to influence legislation should be as severe as the offense. After all, these laws affect all of us. Morgan and U.S. District Judge Robin Cauthron have made a mockery of our “justice” system.
