— A Putnam City elementary and middle school were locked down briefly Thursday after students reported someone had fired a gun, officials said.

Steve Lindley, spokesman for the district, said students came in from the playground area at Western Oaks Elementary and Middle School about 11:30 a.m. and reported someone near the school had fired a gun. The elementary and middle school are next to each other at 7200 NW 23.

Teachers and administrators locked the school down and called Bethany police as a precaution, Lindley said.

Bethany police did not immediately return phone calls Thursday, but Lindley said school officials were told someone in the neighborhood had a pellet gun.

No one was injured, and the school was reopened Thursday afternoon.
