Norvell worked under new Bears coach Marc Trestman two seasons in 2002 and 2003, when Trestman was the Oakland Raiders' offensive coordinator. Norvell was Oakland's tight ends coach.
Trestman has added two assistant coaches from that Raiders team to his new staff in Chicago; Skip Peete was the Raiders' running backs coach then, and took the same position with the Bears.
Aaron Kromer, Trestman's newly hired offensive coordinator, coached Oakland's offensive line then.
Trestman tried to make Norvell the third member of that Raiders staff, which led Oakland to the 2003 Super Bowl, to join him in Chicago.
Norvell also interviewed for the role of Denver Broncos quarterback coach but was not offered the job.
Norvell has been on Bob Stoops' Oklahoma staff since 2008, and held his co-offensive coordinator position the past three seasons.
He coached four seasons (1998-2001) with the Indianapolis Colts, followed by the two-year stint in Oakland, before returning to the college game. Norvell was Nebraska's offensive coordinator from 2004-06, and held the same position at UCLA in 2007.
Norvell has developed a reputation as Oklahoma's ace recruiter, bringing in several talented wide receivers for the Sooners' high-powered spread offense attack. He shares offensive coordinator duties with Josh Heupel, who calls plays.
