OU basketball: Can Sooners make Buddy Hield's dream come true vs. Kansas?

BY STEPHANIE KUZYDYM, Staff Writer, Published: January 25, 2013

Buddy Hield planned to get his hair cut Friday.

The OU freshman had a dream recently that his Sooners beat Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse, a place where OU hasn't won since 1993.

In the dream, Hield said he grabbed a rebound before passing it back out to a teammate who made the game-winning shot. Hield said in the dream, he saw himself rebound and his hair was short.

He ran his hands over his head as he recounted the dream.

“So I gotta get my hair cut,” the OU guard said. “It's gotta be short.”

Heild and the Sooners will get their chance to replicate his dream at 3 p.m. Saturday in Lawrence.

Although it will be Hield's first trip into The Phog wearing the crimson and cream, he's been inside the Kansas basketball cathedral before.

Hield was recruited by the Jayhawks during his junior year at Sunrise Christian Academy in Witchita, Kan. He made the two-hour trip to sit behind the bench and watch Kansas take on Iowa State. He watched the way the Jayhawks passed the ball, the way they moved, the way they communicated and he heard the fans.

“It was just super loud,” he said. “It was an experience going to see everybody who played there. I fell in love with them.”

“I never figured I would come to Oklahoma,” he said. “My coach would always say, ‘Watch how (Kansas) plays, watch how they guard. They're so strong.

Hield, whose high school basketball coach is a Jayhawks fan himself, would watch Kansas play on TV. He learned from them. He was motivated by them, and he said, Kansas basketball changed him.
