For those hosting a Super Bowl party, bigger is definitely better when it comes to the TV.
With the game on Sunday, retailers say this week will be one of the busiest for TV sales. Walter Holland, home theater manager for the Best Buy at 5801 N May, said big-screen TV sales are up.
“A lot of the guys want to have the largest size so all their friends can rant and rave about it,” he said.
Holland recalled a customer who came back this week to exchange the 60-inch TV he had bought for an 80-inch model because the smaller one didn’t fill out his wall.
Top sellers are a 55-inch Samsung LED Smart TV 3-D with Web connectivity for $2,499.99; a 70-inch Sharp for $1,599; and an 80-inch Sharp for $3,499. The retailer’s sales this week focus on the larger sizes, and customers like that they can get a home-theater experience with a big screen without sacrificing quality, he said.
Big time to buy, watch
Nationally, of those planning to watch the Super Bowl, more than 7.5 million households will buy a television this year, up from 5.1 million last year, according to the National Retail Federation. And more than 39 million people will throw a party, with another 60 million planning to attend a party, based on survey results.
“An increasing number of people are finding Super Bowl Sunday the perfect excuse to get together, show off that new TV, try a new recipe, or simply shake off the winter blues for a night,” said Pam Goodfellow, consumer insights director for BIGinsight, which conducted the survey of 9,317 consumers, on which the results were based. “Ever wary of their budgets, consumers will be on the lookout for those hard-to-beat deals on TVs, food and other Super Bowl-related items that they’ve come to expect from retailers as they plan their gatherings this year.”
More than 179.1 million people are expected to watch the Super Bowl, which pits the Baltimore Ravens against the San Francisco 49ers.
Total Super Bowl spending is expected to reach nearly $12.3 billion, BIGinsight found.
Most people plan to buy food and drinks to celebrate the game. According to the survey, 74 percent of game watchers will buy wings, pizza, chips, soda and more.
Also, 3.9 million will buy new furniture, 7.5 million will buy decorations, and 17 million fans say they will buy team apparel or accessories, up from 14.8 million last year.
