OU football recruiting: OU-Notre Dame atmosphere enough to lure Josiah St. John to Norman

Josiah St. John watched his first major college football game Oct. 27, when Notre Dame and Oklahoma clashed in Norman.

“It was kinda crazy to me,” said the Canadian-born St. John, a junior college offensive tackle who signed a National Letter of Intent with OU on Wednesday.

“Just how crazy the fans are about the game, how into they are, in the United States, and in the Big 12.”

St. John (6-foot-6, 305 pounds) played 12-man football at Pickering High School in Toronto, and originally signed with Fresno (Calif.) City College.

He began picking up big-time offers after his freshman season, but wasn't ready academically for Division I.

Through Philadelphia Eagles lineman Danny Watkins — another Canadian, who played college football at Baylor — St. John's high school coach got in touch with the Trinity Valley staff.

“He said, ‘He's got 30-something offers, but his transcript isn't the prettiest in the world; can you help him?'” remembered Trinity Valley coach Brad Smiley. “We said, ‘Yeah, we can help him.'”

St. John will join the Sooners after he wraps up his classes this semester at Trinity Valley, and said he expects to compete for a starting job.

“That's what they've talked to me about,” St. John said of offensive line coaches Bruce Kittle and James Patton.

“They're basically gonna let me come in and compete.”
