A new Oklahoma House committee plans review of federal funds
The House of Representatives States' Rights Committee wants to see which agencies are receiving federal funds and what regulations are required to receive the money.
Members of a new legislative committee dealing with state sovereignty issues should prepare to look at the amount of federal money coming into Oklahoma, the panel's chairman said Tuesday.
Rep. Lewis Moore, chairman of the House of Representatives States' Rights Committee, passed out proposed questions to members to ask agency heads about federal funds they receive.
The questions deal with accountability, what rules and regulations come with the money and the process used to get the federal money.
In addition to the $6.8 billion lawmakers appropriated for this fiscal year, state agencies received about $7.5 billion from the federal government.
Moore, R-Arcadia, said he ultimately would like to bring federal money under the oversight of legislators.
The panel needs to look at “where it's coming from, who it's going to, how it's been spent or not spent,” he said. “We've got some agencies that have two years of carry-over money. They're not spending all the money.”
Rep. Kay Floyd, D-Oklahoma City, suggested the panel get records from the state treasurer's office to see the source of federal funds coming into the state.
