OSU football recruiting: Tre Flowers hopes Johnny Manziel isn't only star HS coach produces

Converse, Texas, Judson coach Mark Smith has a photo in his office of a pretty prominent college football player he once coached.

A fellow by the name of Johnny Manziel.

Tre Flowers wants to give Smith a new photo one day.

“Coach, in a few years you'll have one of me with the Jim Thorpe Award,” Flowers once told Smith.

“He's got high expectations for himself. That's a good thing. He's confident in who he is and he's going to work very hard.”

Flowers, a three-star prospect, developed into a versatile defensive back for Judson, playing both cornerback and safety.

At 6-4 and nearly 180 pounds, he has the size to match up with big wide receivers on the outside. But he also has the coverage skills and awareness to successfully man the middle of the field.

“With the way that that league (the Big 12) is set up, the way that they're doing things,” Smith said, “his cover skills at a safety, particularly against those slot (receivers) and the things that they're seeing, I think it's going to be invaluable to that defense and that system and what coach (Mike) Gundy and Coach (Glenn) Spencer are trying to accomplish.”

Flowers, whose 10-plus offers including Iowa State, Kansas State and Mississippi State, was once an Arizona State commit. But he switched to the Cowboys in late November.

“The thing, when I've talked to Tre, that most (led to the switch) is it just really felt more like a family atmosphere,” Smith said.
