OSU football recruiting: Juco defensive end Sam Wren likely to contribute early for Cowboys

The first thing that stands out about Sam Wren is one impressive stat: 14 1/2 sacks.

That's Wren's sack total for one season, last fall, at Arizona Western College.

In the Big 12 Conference, where passing is the game and pressuring the passer is at a premium, experienced sack artists are coveted.

And with Oklahoma State losing three senior defensive ends, Wren figures to step in and contribute immediately. He's already on campus, going to classes and preparing for spring workouts that will advance his learning curve in new defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer's system.

What makes Wren so good?

“My speed, the way I use my hands to get around the corner and my vision on how to see the linemen – how I can read the offensive tackle,” Wren told

Beyond the sack stat, there's more to notice about Wren. Like his combination of size and speed, at 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds with a listed time of 4.6 in the 40-yard dash.

A first-team, all-conference pick for the Western States Football League, Wren posted 51 tackles as a sophomore.

The Cowboys are hoping for more of the same, with spring serving as an early proving ground.

Wren expects more of the same.

“Just dominating my position,” he told the Rivals site. “I mean, really, that's how I always do it. I want to be the hardest working guy and dominate my position.

“At the end of the spring, I want to feel comfortable with the whole system and really just make it happen for the season coming up. Basically, just go in with a great mindset and motivation to make it happen and do big things.”
