Superman, Wonder Woman romance explored in new releases
DC Comics hopes romance will promote comic-book sales this Valentine's Day.
The love story of Superman and Wonder Woman is explored in two new releases from DC Comics.
In previous continuity, Superman, aka Clark Kent, had been married to Lois Lane. In “The New 52” relaunch, Superman is single, allowing writers and artists to explore possible romances for the character.
In “Young Romance: A New 52 Valentine's Day Special,” a story will explore the romance of Superman and Wonder Woman.
The two characters co-star in the best-selling “Justice League” comic book.
In the current continuity, Superman and Wonder Woman first kissed in last year's “Justice League” No. 12, a story that's reprinted in the hardcover graphic novel “Justice League Volume 2: The Villain's Journey.” The hardcover went on sale Jan. 30, and reprints issues 7-12 of “Justice League” by writer Geoff Johns and artist Jim Lee, with artists Gene Ha and Carlos D'Anda.
“This is the type of story and relationship that ‘The New 52' allows us to create,” said Johns, DC Entertainment's chief creative officer, in a news release. “We're able to make connections between characters that lead us down unexpected roads. How this story progresses throughout the DC Comics universe hopefully will surprise everyone.”
Joey Belden, of Atomik Pop, 7884 S Western Ave., said last September that the Superman-Wonder Woman smooch nearly doubled his store's sales on issue No. 12 of “Justice League.”
