‘Amazing Ocean 3D'

Even if you haven't upgraded your home entertainment system to three dimensions, you can still take an eye-popping plunge with the dazzling nature documentary “Amazing Ocean 3D.”

While the underwater trek was shot in stereoscopic 3-D, the single disc is designed to play in 2-D or 3-D. Even without the extra dimension, the film dives into thrilling close-up views of bashful clownfish, alluring angelfish and coral-munching parrotfish.

From playful dolphins and placid manatees to eerie jellyfish and elusive octopi, “Amazing Ocean” zooms in on an array of fascinating marine creatures, but the crystalline high-definition picture gorgeously showcases the cerulean waters as well.

Narrator Glen McCready delivers quotes from Jules Verne and Jacques Cousteau, intriguing trivia about the damselfish's red alga farming habits and warnings about the fragility of coral colonies in a folksy, matter-of-fact way that contrasts effectively with Nassouh Hichri's fancifully serene score.

Writer/director Benjamin Eicher and co-director Timo Joh. Mayer keep the 55-minute movie gliding along as efficiently and elegantly as a manta ray from one uncommonly cozy encounter with a deep-sea wonder to the next.

Plumbing the depths and conveying their marvels with such stunning intimacy must have been the kind of challenging high-tech task perfect for a making-of documentary. Alas, the behind-the-scenes adventure is left unshared, as the Blu-ray unfortunately doesn't boast a single bonus feature.
