EDMOND — A controversial commercial and duplex development near Oak Ridge Drive and Second Street will be before the city council for the second time in as many weeks.
Council members meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at 20 S Littler Ave.
The Hansen Family Trust wants to change the zoning from restricted commercial to a planned unit development so it can build a 24,000-square-foot retail shopping center on 5.55 acres on the southern half of the property.
The developer also wants to build duplexes with 10 buildings and 20 units on 4.38 acres to the north in what is to be called Bradbury Station.
After 14 nearby neighbors opposed the development, the council voted 2-2 on amending the plan to make the way for the rezoning request. Councilman Darrell Davis was out of state for a death in his family.
Todd McKinnis, attorney for the trust and Leonard Hanson, asked that the application be heard at Monday's city council meeting when all members are present. Council members agreed.
Concerns voiced at the first city council meeting included traffic, the proper placement of a water line, condition of the road on Oak Ridge Drive and opposition to renters living in the neighborhood.
Windsong housing addition is located to the north and Mason Oaks housing addition to the northeast. Ridge Point housing addition, to the east, is a higher-density development than the proposed duplexes.
The duplexes are expected to rent for $1,500 to $2,000 a month.
Without the zoning change, the entire 9.93 acres could be developed as commercial, which McKinnis said would create more traffic.
