New records for NewsOK traffic
We’re happy that NewsOK had a record-breaking month for page views and unique visitors in May.
We’re not happy that it took a a couple of tragic stories to push us over the high mark, but it is gratifying to know that our audience continues to grow and that people come to NewsOK when they want to know something they need to know.
The story about OU football player Austin Box’s death really drove page views a couple of weeks ago. With all the extra traffic we received for that breaking news, we were headed for a strong showing in May.
But then the May 24 tornadoes arrived, terrorizing the state, playing chicken with my neighborhood north of Edmond, and eventually killing 10 with an EF-5 tornado. That wave of breaking news pushed us over the top and past our previous record month of November 2010.
On May 24, we had the second-highest day for page views ever (second only to June 14, 2010 when much of the city flooded). But the numbers on May 25 topped the numbers of June 14, 2010. With that, we added a new daily record for traffic.
It’s not unusual for our traffic to reach it’s peak the day after a breaking news event. Our traffic spiked for breaking news, but then it spikes even higher the day after breaking news as we provide a full recap of what happened for our audience.
