Maker's Mark defends watered-down bourbon

Increased taxes. Unemployment still high. Gas prices out of control. And now Maker's Mark is betraying us all.

Maker's Mark bourbon is being watered down slightly to stretch supplies of the liquor, but chairman emeritus Bill Samuels Jr. said in a letter posted Monday on Maker's Mark website that the weaker drink tastes the same.

Over the weekend, Maker's Mark, part of Deerfield, Ill.-based Beam Inc., said in a letter to customers that the bourbon would be distributed at 42 percent alcohol by volume, down from 45 percent alcohol, or 90 proof.
