— An Oklahoma City schoolteacher has been invited to sit Tuesday in first lady Michelle Obama's box for the State of the Union speech.

Susan Bumgarner, a prekindergarten teacher at Wilson Arts Integration Elementary School, will be among the guests in the House chamber whose “day-to-day lives would benefit from the policy proposals” to be unveiled by President Barack Obama, according to the White House.

Bumgarner recently was nominated for Oklahoma City Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

A University of Oklahoma graduate, she has been working since 1992 at what is now the Wilson Arts Integration Elementary School. She has taught infants and toddlers, trained Head Start teachers and led readiness classes for parents.

In 2010, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett sat in the first lady's box for the State of the Union speech. He was invited because of his work to fight obesity in Oklahoma City.

The president's speech to a joint session of Congress is scheduled for 8 p.m.
