Even if Tuesday's snowy weather doesn't last, officials at one local charity want those in need to know they don't have to be without a winter coat.

The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command, 501 S Harvey, has 7,000 coats to give away, said Jeanean Castle, director of development for the agency.

The load comes after several individuals and businesses donated to the center or at drop-off locations across the state.

“We have coats of every shape and size,” Castle said. “Most are gently used, but some are brand new.”

The state's relatively warm winter has resulted in little demand for coats, Castle said.

“We have more coats than we have people coming in for them,” she said.

Still, Castle said, she knows people will risk venturing out into the cold without a coat.

“I see it happen and I know it will,” she said. “Our goal is to keep people warm in the winter and cool in the summer. ... We're hoping people will come by.”

The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command will give the donated coats away for free at their location from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays until the supply runs out.

Castle said no person in need will be turned away, but coats are limited to one per person, and a picture ID is preferred.
